About…
The Rockland Green Map Project
The purpose of the Rockland Green Map project is to make green and sustainable resources available for residents of and visitors to our beautiful county. Rockland Green Map is part of the Green Map System (GMS), which gives local mapping groups a map making framework. There is still considerable freedom in the mapmaking, and the GMS provides support and guidelines when needed. The categories and list of features we want to add to the map are provided by the GMS as well as the award-winning icons we will use.
We also collaborate with Keep Rockland Beautiful, an organization that organizes clean-ups in the county and brings the wonderful educational program, BEAT, to schools.
We are now one of the first green maps online in the new world wide green map, called the OpenGreenMap. The information (sites) we are continuously collecting is available online with symbols (icons) on top of a Google base map. See the actual map here, our name is in the list on the left side. Any comments can be left on the on the Open Green Map site, or through our site’s contact or site suggestion pages.
Who are we?
We all have different day jobs (yoga teacher, Earth scientist, professional harpist, music teacher, singer) but share the love for nature and concern for our future.
What goes on a green map?
The map will show organizations, businesses and places that promote a green living or sustainable practices for the future. This includes all local or organic farms or agricultural sites, places where sustainable, organic and fair trade products are available and other ecological, cultural, and historical resources. The complete list of categories and features that we are choosing from are listed on our suggest-a-site page.
Community input
We are calling on our neighbors to suggest sites for the future rockland green map. This map is for us, we who live, work and visit Rockland County. With the community participating we can make a more complete map! Visit our suggest-a-site page to read more on what goes on the map and how you can add your suggestions and comments

Get involved
Welcome to the Rockland Green Map project
We are looking for volunteers who want to join our project. The project would benefit from the input of residents or people active in the county. Your ideas and knowledge is important to us! We communicate mainly by e-mail, but a phone and a phone book is appropriate for several tasks.
Tasks that we are facing right now are:
- Data collection and verification – adding new sites and verifying old, including adding or checking contact information (address, telephone, and web or email addresses)
- Fundraising – where can we get financial support for hosting the online map and to pay our membership fee to the GMS?
- Outreach – participate in meetings and helping out during other outreach events; contribute with ideas for outreach and PR.
Please let us know if you are interested by contacting us here! Thank you!
