New icon on the map!

GMS Icon: Food Gathering Site

On every Green Map you can find the award winning and community developed icons that depicts sustainable or unsustainable sites in categories like Nature or Social Justice.

We are proud to put a new icon on the Rockland Green Map:

Food Gathering Site

The definition reads:

Pick and gather edibles, glean fallen or unwanted fruits, go fishing, or harvest wildcrafted herbs and foods. Consider ecological concerns, delicate habitats, and waste issues when using this icon.

This first use of this icon goes to a website that offers ideas and courses in how to recognize and utilize wild plants. Just remember, keep your “foraging as respectful and sustainable as possible” (Paul Tappenden of Rockland Forager)

Action alert!

There are still quite a few ice cream companies that still allow the use of genetically modified bovine growth hormone.

Here is your chance to take action: Link to Action page (you are only a few clicks away from making a difference) where you can ask your assembly member to sponsor a bill that would make it compulsary to label a product which has this growth hormone in it (or where it has been used for its production).

WHAT IS RBGH?

Dairy Cows

rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) is a genetically engineered variant of the natural growth hormone produced by cows. Manufactured by Monsanto, it is sold to dairy farmers under the trade name Posilac. Injection of this hormone forces cows to boost milk production by about 10%, while increasing the incidences of mastitis, lameness, and reproductive complications.
